Advertising in Android applications do drain the battery more than 70%

Battery power is a common drawback of today's smartphones. In addition to the old reasons as to screen, powerful hardware out, researchers from Purdue University and Microsoft has found that 75% of cases on Android battery power related applications is by the in-game advertising causes. Android has a lot of free software and games, most all of them are inserting ads and will appear in the continuous process we use. The advertisements and continuous Internet connection to transmit information making Android machines become very drain the battery.

To test this, the researchers have developed a special application called EProf monitoring function and battery power consumption analysis of each individual application in an Android. Machine tested was the HTC Passion (Nexus One) running on Android 2.3 and the software testing include Angry Birds, FreeChess and applications New York Times. In Angry Birds game, he Abhinav Pathak, head of research, has conduct battery consumption recorded in the first stages of the game and see, only 30% battery power consumption is for the game (pictures, graphics, sound ...) to 70% of battery consumption is due to the upload process personal information, location, download and display in-game advertising. He Pathak said the ads will appear repeatedly in each and every game screen at all so it consumes a similar battery. As for the game FreeChess, the researchers also obtained similar results. There are about 70% of the battery consumption is related to the advertising process. And not only the application to insert new ad machine on battery power, even Android's default browser and software news New York Times also has about 15% battery power is monitored by the user task. Pathak He explained that the purpose of the group not find any applications or advertise any cause battery power, which is mainly to develop software that helps programmers and advertisers can optimize the their software. Advertising in the Android application is not consuming battery so, just because they are so bad programmers only. The team said they are planning to release software analysis above EProf pin open source format so people can download to use. The group is working with Microsoft to bring EProf Windows Phone operating system to enhance its research capabilities.
